Tom Shaffer and Dave Cieslewicz – Executive Director of the Wisconsin Bike Federation

A recap of activities and topics from Madison Bike Fed Lobby Day

Dave Cieslewicz (chess LEV ich) has been the executive director of the Wisconsin Bike Fed since October of 2013. With 7,000 members the Bike Fed is the nation's largest statewide advocacy group representing people who bike and walk. Dave served as Mayor of Madison from 2003 to 2011, where he was a strong supporter of cycling and set the city on its path to achieving Platinum status as one of the five best cities in America for cycling. Dave grew up in West Allis and he keeps closely tied to the Milwaukee area, spending time in the Bike Fed's office in Silver City (just off National Avenue) once a week.

Dave's presentation will focus on the condition of Wisconsin's roads and trails. Does everyone need to become a gravel rider? That's the question we face as Wisconsin roads have been rated the second worst in the nation. Towns and counties have already started to convert roads that have been paved for over a century back to gravel as the state is running a transportation fund deficit of a billion dollars over two years. And our state's once nation-leading trail system is deteriorating with a maintenance budget at a fraction of what's needed. We're at a crucial moment for the future of Wisconsin's great cycling infrastructure. Dave will discuss how we got to this point, what might be done to turn things around, the political environment we're working in and what we all can do to help.
